Sowore v. Tinubu: Matters Arising

I would not call the Nigerian president “a criminal,” no matter the USA judicial determination on his drug-money laundering case. Sahara Reporters’ Omoyele Sowore, Tinubu’s fellow presidential contestant in 2023, did. The Nigerian department of state security (DSS) should have ignored Sowore. President Tinubu is a big man; he can take a few cyber-punches, and he does not do social media! Instead of backing off, DSS stayed the course of confrontation by issuing Sowore a “one week ultimatum to retract posts criticizing President Tinubu.”

Sowore clapped back; “Even if you @OfficialDSSNG, give me till the end of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure in 2027, I will NOT withdraw my statement because I know he is a criminal….” Unlike Joe Igbokwe and Bayo Onanuga, I will not appeal to Sowere to back off and stay safe; he may want to enhance his #RevolutionNow. I will write about the likes of Igbokwe, who spent years insulting the Igbo NATION nonstop just to get the job of a Lagos gutter cleaner, sorry, “Special Adviser for Drainage….”

In going after Sowore, DSS exposed useful tools in the fight against ethnophobia. In its long letter to X to remove Sowore’s posts and to deactivate his account, the secret state police revealed that such a comment was tantamount to “domestic terrorism.” Great!

Among those with inciteful voices include Reuben Abati, the AriseTV anchor. His tiff with Ojinika Okpe exposed his meanness and ethnophobic encumbrances. Not only did he tell a bald-faced lie about Ndiigbo, but he also went on to threaten Ojy on air. Abati would not so-speak to a half-decent Yoruba lady publicly. After the recent return of adorable Ojy to ‘What’s Trending,’ Abati voiced that the Igbo multiply like cancer… in a slanted support of what Lagos landlords allegedly say not to rent to potential Igbo tenants. An Igbo anchor would not use such a mean-spirited metaphor, even if his father owned the TV channel.

Here is a short list of arguably “domestic terrorists.” The President’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, wrote on March 19, 2023: “Let 2023 be the last time of Igbo interference in Lagos politics. Let there be no repeat in 2027.” The crass statement upset many, including now Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, SAN. The stone-faced Onanuga reportedly retorted, “I don’t owe anyone any apology for addressing the existential threats of our people. I am after all, first of all a Yoruba, before being a Nigerian.” Ohanaeze Ndiigbo has concluded that Onanuga harbors “unthoughtful, loathsome, cantankerous, uncouth, repugnant, inflammable and deep-seated hate against [the] Igbo.” With the DSS depiction, the president’s spokesman, is a possible domestic terrorist. Imagine his chutzpah and hypocrisy in appealing to Sowore privately to ‘farabalẹ’!

On Reno Omokri, a former aide of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, let’s ignore his Igbophobic clout-chasing. The insinuations and insults he heaped on Tinubu are far worse than Sowore’s statement on X. Omokri took on intercontinental evangelism, calling Tinubu a “criminal” and a “known drug lord.” Now in APC and angling for an ambassadorial position, all his sins are forgiven. Reno Omokri should be arrested before Sowore.

The Diaspora Affairs Commission chair, Abike Dabire, does not hide her Igbophobia. Netters have been calling her out. She won’t change. Anytime an Igbo has a little infraction abroad, she makes sure the ethnicity is highlighted and broadcast. She won’t release the names of 24 Nigerians on death row in Saudi Arabia for drug-related charges. We know why. Last August, Oba Joseph Oloyede, a Yoruba, was jailed in the USA for leading a $4.2 million Covid-19 mega-fraud gang. No mention by Abike. Then she retweeted with laughing emojis a tweet calling the Igbo “monkeys.” We moved on because, if anyone qualifies for such a racial epithet, Abike should be in the top ten!

I do not understand the problem of former minister of aviation, Femi Fani Kayode (FFK). His handsome young sons are solid 50% Igbo with a varying mix of Yoruba, Nupe, and Fulani DNA. Yet, on joining APC and separating from his then wife, Igbo-bashing became his pastime. During the 2023 elections, his speeches mirrored a man who would slaughter his sons by an Igbo woman, if a Rwanda’s Hutu-Tutsi situation should befall western Nigeria: Don’t doubt the power of hate! His speeches inspired the Lagos gangster Mc Olumo to warn Igbo voters to stay home for their safety. Heads were broken; blood flowed. FFK has hibernated since he engaged another light-skinned Igbo beauty.

Where was DSS when Governor Okpebholo of Edo threatened Peter Obi? Oh, he has immunity. Great! Where was DSS when the Oba of Lagos threatened to drown Igbo voters? Where was DSS when now Honorable Mohammed Bello El-Rufai was spewing hate against the Igbo? Where was DSS when Wike said he would start a fire in the state of any governor who challenged his absolute authority in Rivers State?

Ndiigbo should organize and act before another pogrom inspired by adjudged domestic terrorists. Let’s document officials proven to be domestic terrorists. No country wants a terrorist of any sort within its borders.

Last Note: DSS should allow this matter to rest. We have moved on. President Tinubu is a powerful politician, an African president! He can take a few cyber-punches quietly and from those he considers “losers.” He has been called by worse names.

Let this too pass!
